Why you should choose LED technology for your flashlight

LED technology for FlashlightA look at flashlights and their evolution into LED technology. The flashlight as you know it has evolved and you should be taking advantage of new improvements that will deliver better performance, longer life, and more reliability. In this post, you’ll find out what you need to know to make an informed about best LED flashlights.

Flashlight technology

The invention of the handheld flashlight over one hundred years ago and its subsequent improvements ushered a new era of convenience and safety to anyone that needed to light their way. Over the last decade the flashlight has been transformed by a technologic revolution.

The use of LED technology in place of the standard incandescent bulb has resulted in a handheld lighting device that is brighter, longer lasting, and more versatile. A comparison of standard flashlight technology and LED flashlight technology reveals many factors that make the LED the new champion of flashlight technology.

Incandescent Flashlights

Standard flashlight technology typically uses a tungsten filament incandescent bulb which creates light by heating a suspended thin filament until it glows. This creates a great deal of heat while producing a yellow light. The inefficiency of this process requires heavy battery (such as a best 18650 battery) use and the suspended filament is very fragile and prone to breaking.

Additionally, the light beam put out has varying levels of illumination from the center of the beam to its edges. Another disadvantage of the standard flashlight, is that the light output decreases as the batteries are drained reducing effectiveness over the life cycle of the cells.

LED Light Emitting Diode

The Light Emitting Diode (LED) on the other hand, uses a charged semi-conductor material wrapped in a clear solid resin to create light. The light is created when an electrical current changes the state of the material by an exchange of electrons. This process requires less energy and its greater efficiency results in a light that is much brighter and more evenly distributed than a standard flashlight allowing the beam to be seen much greater distances.

LED Light Emitting DiodeIn addition, the light produced is a white light that more accurately mimics daylight allowing for greater detail in the light zone. The solid resin covering of the LED also serves to protect it and this shockproof design vastly increases its durability over incandescent bulbs with their fragile suspended filament.

What is a Lumen anyway?

There are a couple of ways that flashlight output can be measured. Lux is often used and measures the amount of light that strikes a surface. This can be a decent rough overall measure when comparing two similar lights but doesn’t take into account the different beam patterns that exist in flashlights and becomes misleading when comparing light from a flood type of beam versus a spot type of beam.

Lumen is the most accepted and accurate measurement for our purpose. It is a measure of the total light emitted and can be used to compare flashlights as well as other types of bulbs. An important consideration when interpreting the lumen number is whether it is emitter lumen or ‘out the front’ lumen. Emitter lumen specifications are the highest output directly from the LED emitter or bulb before it travels through the lens of the flashlight. There are some inevitable losses of output from the flashlight reflector and lens that must be considered. If possible, and ‘out of the front lumen’ value will be the most accurate and fairest method of flashlight output comparisons.

Although it is hard to make a fair comparison between lights of different type and configuration, a general result of the efficiency of LEDs gives them an output of around 25-60 lumen per watt while an incandescent bulb will produce between 14-17 lumen per watt. That means that for the same battery input, LEDs will convert on a more efficient scale.

The durable and efficient nature of the LED unit results in battery life that is ten times greater on average over standard flashlights. Some LED flashlights also utilize electronic controls that provide multiple levels of light depending on need which increases efficiency and further extends battery life.

Also, many LED Flashlights have controls which maintain full light output up until the very end of battery life. Another advantage of this greater efficiency is that effective LED flashlights can be made much smaller than standard flashlights and still produce practical effects.

Acoustic Guitar lesson: Chords In the Key of G

There are many amateur Acoustic Guitar players who struggle and try to get by on only three chords, G, C and D, but there are only 4 more basic chords that you could learn that would give you the ability to play in almost any key utilizing a capo.

When you are finished with this brief article you will not only know all of the chords in the key of G, but you will also be able to find a free resource that will show you how to form over 1,100 chords. That’s right, a FREE chord book.

Let’s move on to the Chords in the key of G. One thing that will be helpful in understanding chords and progressions is that most all of the time your three main chords in any given key, in this case the G, the C and the D chords are almost always going to be major chords. We are also going to refer to these chords by a number as well as a letter. The chords in the key of G (in this order) are G, A, B, C, D, E, and F. They can also be referred to as the 1 2 3 4 5 6 and 7. G being the 1 chord, C, the fourth one up being the 4 and D, the fifth one up being the 5.

Following this pattern, G would be the 1, A would be the 2, B would be the 3, C would be the 4 , D would be the 5, E would be the 6 and F would be the 7. Technically, F# would be the 7, but for our purposes we will refer to the F chord as the 7. This is what is called the Nashville Numbering System. Check out my lens on squidoo for a full description of the Nashville Numbering System.

Most of the time, the 1 chord, 4 chord and 5 chords will be major chords. The 2, 3 and 6 chords will be minor chords and the 7 will be a diminished chord.

I will show you how to form all of the major chords in the key of G as well as how to modify the 2, 3 and 6 chords to form minor chords.

The strings on the Best Acoustic Guitar are numbered from the bottom to the top from the thinnest string to the thickest string numbered 1 (being the thinnest) to 6 (being the thickest and the top string as you are holding the guitar).

The fingers are numbered from your thumb as the index finger being finger 1, middle finger being finger 2, ring finger or third finger being 3 and pinky being 4. We will refer to the fingers by finger number
With this in mind, there are two different ways to form an open G chord.

Regatta Exert TA Rain Jacket

+ Completely waterproof
+ Inexpensive
+ Generous pockets
Fiddly zip
Hood blocks side vision

I sometimes find it hard to suppress a smirk, when, in heavy rain, I see a well-groomed person walking the few metres from the supermarket car park to the main entrance wearing a €200 top-brand rain jacket. Surely an umbrella would do just as well?

For outdoor fans, an umbrella is not really practical. If you’re outside and exposed to the elements for hours, you will need a light and reliable anti-rain solution.

I bought this jacket about 12 years ago. It cost about €20. Regatta is a British company which specialises in outdoor wear for the whole family. I didn’t know the name of the jacket, so I called the customer service department and received an answer within 30 seconds. They also informed me that the Exert TA is a predecessor to their current Packaway line of light rain jackets.

First impressions

The jacket is made of Polyamid. This makes it waterproof, but not breathable. It is extremely light and also folds up to a very small size.

The zip (see photo) is rather flimsy looking and does not have a tag on it. There are also two Velcro strips to close the jacket flaps along the zip. Two push button fasteners at the bottom of the jacket and beneath the hood ensure that the jacket is closed from top to bottom.

There are two generous-sized outside pockets at the side. They do not close, but they have flaps to prevent rain entering. In addition, there are two very big open pockets inside, certainly big enough for best tactical flashlight (such as jetbeam ba10, zebralight sc52, etc)or maps, for example.

The hood is not concealable and you close it by tying two thick tagged strings together. (see photo) The Regatta rain jacket is machine-washable.

The jacket outside

After using this jacket for so long, I can confirm that it is completely waterproof. It’s been worn in all kinds of rainfall, ranging from light drizzle to heavy storms, sometimes for a few minutes, sometimes for an hour or more. Quite simply, in keeping me dry, it has never, ever let me down.

The non-breathable aspect was not really an issue for me. I sweat a lot anyway, even in much more expensive products which are meant to allow your body moisture to escape outside, but don’t. Surprisingly, perspiration has not often been an issue, which is probably due to the jacket’s lightness.

As our guest reviewer Marty pointed out in his Columbia Omni Tech jacket review, because of its weight, it makes no sense not to take it along. Not only that, it folds up to a very compact size so you can stash it in your outside rucksack pocket, for example.

Although the zip doesn’t inspire confidence at first sight, it has not broken yet. It has no tag and is difficult to open with thin gloves and impossible to close.

The hood does not slip if you tie it tightly enough and it keeps your head completely dry. It does, however, slightly impair your side vision when cycling, so I would only class this as an emergency bike jacket.

The pockets are impressive. Nothing has ever fallen out of them and everything has stayed dry. I rarely use the inside pockets, but they have always worked well.

The Exert TA has been washed once in the washing machine after the cat peed all over it. I ignored the instructions to reproof it after washing as this would have cost a quarter of the jacket’s price. This did not seem to diminish the waterproof quality of the jacket.

There are much more sophisticated products out there, but this keeps me dry. It has proven its worth in varying degrees of rainfall and is also affordable.

I would, however, have liked to see tags on the zip (surely not that expensive?)
and a better solution for the hood.

Krups Coffee Machines Review

Krups Coffee Machines are a classic among the coffee makers. There are classic coffee makers available from Krups as well as full-featured espresso machines.

One of the top models clearly is the Krups XP9000 Super-Automatic Espresso Machine and Coffee Center. To make your perfect cappuccino  you do not nee to move you cup and you don’t need a separate milk container. It automatically grinds, tamps, brews and disposes of the spent grounds. The water is instantaneously warmed to the optimal temperature of 198 degrees! You can use whole beans or ground coffee with it. You can story different profiles (such as one for each family member) and the settings for them. It is ass close as you can get to a commercial coffee maker used in restaurants. It is hard to find a coffee machine that is easier to use.

If you need a smaller alternative consider the Krups Allegro Espresso Makers (FND111). It has a very space saving design and a removable drip tray for easy clean up.

If you prefer a classic drip coffee machine try the Krups KT4065 10-Cup Thermal Coffeemaker. It is made of brushed stainless steel, designed by Swedish designer Bjorn Dahlstrom. The machine brews that perfect cup of coffee and looks great on your countertop. It features a uniquely angled upward-facing control panel, the LCD has a high-contrast black-on-white display.

If you want to dip into the world of espresso but still would like the confort of owning a ‘simple’ coffee machine consider one of the ‘dual’ models Krups offers. Basically these are classic drip coffee machines and espresso machines in one. A good and very popular example is the Krups 985-42 Il Caffe Duomo Coffee and Espresso Machine. It brews  8 cups of regular coffee and 4 cups of espresso. Note that the water chamber of the coffee maker is separate from the espresso boiler. There is a ‘coffee’ and an ‘espresso’ button. So it truly is two machines in one.

One machine that draws everyone’s attention is the Krups YY1283FD Espresso Machine – mostly because of it’s look resembling the appearance of a dog. If you were ever to let your kids choose a coffee machine it will very likely be the YY1283FD.

Gaggia Coffee Machines Review

Gaggia Coffee Machines are clearly the high-end of coffee machines. If you buy a Gaggia you can expect to pay top-dollar but receive cutting edge coffee-making technology in return.

The Gaggia Classic is probabaly one of the oldest – if not the oldest – continually available coffee and espresso machines for consumers today. It is a solid performer that can deliver great coffee and espresso at a reasonable price.

A rather new model is the Gaggia Compact Digital – the digital version of the popular Gaggia Compact super automatic. It offers increased control over brewing temperatures and volumes.

An rather compact all-arounder is the Gaggia 16100 Evolution Home Espresso Cappuccino Machine. It is a machine with commercial-style brew group and sleek thermo-set plastic housing. It has 2 stainless-steel filter baskets, coffee tamper, and measuring scoop included. It reminds the user of commecrcial style coffee makers – while still having a stylish appearance that fits into a modern kitchen. This combination makes it rather popular among young coffee lovers.
According to recent comsumer reviews you get  ‘authentic Italian espresso at an affordable price’. The price is still in the range of around $200. Compared with the Carezza model it has a larger drip tray and a cup warmer. The instrauction manual includes a CD-ROM which contains helpful little movies and narrations and alot of really useful advanced tips on how to get the most out of this coffee machine. Cleaning the machine is very easy – it can be done in under a minute as all the parts are easily accessible.

If space is an issue try out the Gaggia 12300 Baby Class Manual Espresso Machine. It measures only 10-2/5 by 9-3/5. It accommodates ESE coffee pods, can make 2 cups at a time, and has a built-to-last three-way solenoid valve.

Here are some more Gaggia models:

Delonghi Coffee Machines

Delonghi Coffee Machines are among the best known coffee machines that exist.

Let’s have a look at the DeLonghi DCF212T Drip Coffee Maker with Convenient Front Access. It is a very handy on-the-counter coffee machine. The DCF212T is a 12 cup drip coffee machine with 24-hour programmable timer. What is convenient about this model is that you don’t need to access it from above. You can quickly and easily fill the water and the coffee in only by having access from the front. A special ‘aroma button’ activates a  brewing process that enhances the flavor and aroma of the coffee. One trick the machines uses to enhance the flavor of the coffee is to release water into the filter in 30-second intervals. This will make sure that the best flavor is extracted from the coffee.

Another very popular machine is the DC312T 14-Cup Drip Coffeemaker. Like the other model it features a 2-hour auto shut-off and a programmable timer. Setting the timer allows for waking up to the aroma of freshly brewed coffee or for having coffee ready to serve after dessert without having to get up from the table half way through dinner. It also has a glass carafe; pause-and-serve function and a non-stick warming plate. It brews up to 14 cups. a special setting that dribbles the water more slowly, steeping the grounds. The special setting that will dribble water very slowly, steeping the grounds is probably responsible for the unique flavor. If you want a robust and non-bitter flavor this model might be worth a try.

If you want a real espresso machine, but neither want to spend a small fortune or have a machine that will take half of your kitchen you might want to try the DeLonghi BCO120T Combination. It has a 4-cup espresso carafe, adjustable brew strength and you can brew coffee and espresso simultaneously! You can also make cappuccino, latte or hot chocolate with it. The swivel ‘Jet Frother’ mixes steam, air and milk, thereby producing a rich, creamy froth for great cappuccinos.

If you just want espresso then have a look at the DeLonghi EC155 Espresso Maker. It has received great customer reviews. It comes with 2 thermostats for separately controlling water and steam pressure. It only takes a minute to heat up – which will satify even those who don’t like to wait for their espresso.

Best Coffee Machines

Buying a coffee machine is not what it used to be 10 years ago. Today coffee machines are expected to be highly flexible, be adjustable for coffee aroma, intensity and many other parameters.

No longer a modern coffee machine only needs to grind and brew coffee – people these days want to drink espresso, capuchino, latte machiato, flavored coffee and many other forms the black drink that used to be so simple a decade ago.

Today modern coffee and espresso machines are expected to

  • clean themselves
  • keep coffee warm and fresh
  • be programmable to automatically make coffee at a specific time of the day
  • recognize profiles and preferences of users

This way modern coffee machines resemble much more an all-around life-style and conveniance machine than a simple plug- and play coffee brewer.

However, who can handle all the complexity that comes with all these new features? Coffee still needs to be simple to make and easy to understand. Consider that most people are sleepy when getting up and operating the machine – it needs to be as simple as possible – yet offer all the comfort expected in today’s multi-functional coffee makers!

Best Coffee Machines For Home Use

It turns out that – according to user reviews – for home use the coffee machines by Breville are at the top of the recommendation list: The Breville BKX600XL get most of the positive reviews. However the machine has a very hefty price tag of around $299. But for this price you can expect it to have all the feature a modern coffee machine needs. It features a removable 60-ounce water reservoir. It also has a programmable message center. The brew sizes are 5.25 oz, 7.25 oz., or 9.25 oz. It has proven to be perfect for office use – where many people will use the machine every single day in different ways.

Another very popular home coffee machine is the Techni Vorm Mocca Master CD: Despite it’s rather strange look it is able to perform many things not alot home coffee makers can do – such as release water at the proper (200F) temperatures to the bed of ground coffee or fully saturate and extract from the bed of ground coffee. They are also the only consumer machine to pass the SCAA’s certification program for home brewers. It retails for around $200 but is rather hard to get in the US or Canada.

Single Cup Coffee Machines

If you are looking for a single cup machine you might want to try the Bunn MCP. If you don’t have lots of space and you are a single or 2-person household this might be the coffee machine of your choice. The reheating water tank is large and it heats up really fast.

Coffee Machines For Travel Mugs

For Travel Mugs there are other choices. One of the best according to customer reviews is the Hamilton Beach Brew Station 47665 2-Cup Machine. The travel mugs can be filledd easily and the coffee stays hot for more than 2 hours. Also it is very easy to clean and is ideal for single hand use.
